irving penn : my selection

“Sensitive people faced with the prospect of a camera portrait put on a face they think is one they would like to show the world. …Very often what lies behind the facade is rare and more wonderful than the subject knows or dares to believe.” —Irving Penn, 1975.

It’s beyond me how portraits can be so beautiful. Mr. Penn, the photography legend, did SO much work during his long life, and it’s certainly ALL worth a look in special detail. He opened his studio in 1953 while working for Vogue, and lived a long life until the age of 92. There are thousands of great photos on all kinds of subjects (not to mention fashion photography), but  since I’m always referring to characters in the arts, here is a short selection of people whose work inspires me all the time. A lot of these characters are no longer with us, but how special it is to be able to look at their faces and somehow connect with their work.
