build your own living structure! looking at ken isaacs’ investigation

I ran into this interesting story on an art and architecture blog that I like to read, and I thought I’d share! I really like utopian architecture projects, ideas for new spaces for living, and proposals to rethink our lifestyles and our needs. This small book published in 1974 by architect Ken Isaacs looks at an affordable modular system that he designed when he found himself not being able to afford housing for his family. With simple tools and materials the manual explains how to make everything from the furniture to the structure of the house itself. Isaacs spent many years investigating the subject and giving lectures, seminars and courses about it.

I really enjoyed reading through the manual. The captions are very conversational and humorous, and you really feel like he’s talking to you. This is a great reminder for us to think of ways of simplifying our lives and appreciating the spaces that we live in! Scroll down to see a short interview with Isaacs from Dwell Magazine.

“This book is a beautiful guide about how to make a variety of flexible experimental indoor interiors, storage units, and a microhouse. The microhouse is a flexible creation of architect, Ken Isaacs. The modular design is based on stacked tetrahedrons, which can be moved in and around each other providing shelter and dividing living space in a creative way. The book gives you step-by-step instructions with plans for many different versions of Isaac’s original designs interspersed with ideas about simplicity, and getting rid of our personal possessions. The book is type written and spiral round in a nice Do-It-Yourself aesthetic, and Isaacs writes in a genial manner as if he were sitting across the table from you. He muses on the philosophical meanings of surplus and uses the designs as a means of addressing life as whole; a simple place to raise a family and house extended family that has a low impact on the surrounding natural environment” – by the The Library of Radiant Optimism for Let’s Re-Make the World
